Birthplace of Mijo Mirkovic
Memorial collection in the home of Istrian writer and economist who is known under the nom de plume Mate Balota. The collection offers an introduction to life and literary path of this great writer, his heritage and local pottery traditions.
The remains of old Rakalj settlement lie closer to the coast and today they are mostly uninhabited. The ruins of the old castle and St. Agnes Church on a hill offer a great panoramic sea view.
If you take a drive from Marcana towards Duga uvala, turn in direction of Mutvoran. You will be able to see the remains of a fort of the ancient tribe of Histri and a hamlet.
Less than one mile north of Marcana you can visit the Ljubiceva Cave with a bit demanding climb.
Bays in Marcana
Krnica is situated on an elevated position overlooking the sea, surrounded by forests, pastures and vineyards. It is the only village in this part of Istria with its own port. A few miles of driving through the pine forest takes you to Luka Krnica (Krnica port) with the fishing village, ancient boats, fishing nets and stone cottages. There are more bays with crystal clear sea along the rocky coast. It is the perfect location for a holiday in all seasons. In spring you can stroll through the meadows with field flowers and asparaguses. The fall is the season of grapes, olives and mushrooms.
Blaz is a bay of unspoiled nature. It used to be important port for the Romans. You can visit the remains of the five ancient mills. There is a legend of the crown of Tomislav, who was according to legend the first king of Croatia. This peaceful and bay is perfect for nature and wilderness lovers.
Duga Uvala is one of the most popular and beautiful bays in this area, only seven miles southeast from Marcana.
Budava is a bay where nature was also preserved. It used to be a port of the Histri tribe and later Romans as well. Now it is listed as natural heritage.
