Would you like to spend your holiday in one of apartments or villas on an island in Croatia? We offer you great possibilities for couples, families and groups of friends on one of Dalmatian islands of dramatic contrasts – Vir Island.
The island of Vir is not a place of mass tourism. It is connected to the mainland in its southeast via bridge, just north of the town of Zadar. There is an international airport in Zemunik Gornji, only a 40 km drive from Vir.
Here you will almost exclusively find private accommodation consisting of apartments, cottages and villas, often with their own mooring space for boats. Restaurants and cafes with terraces in the shade, grocery shops, a supermarket, a butcher’s shop and a small fish and green market await you and will offer you all need on your holiday.
The coast of the island of Vir is very dynamic and especially rugged and beautiful in the north part of the island where you find fresh air and rocky coast facing the majestic mount Velebit on the mainland. There are more sandy and pebble beaches partly nesting along pine trees. The shallow sea with sandy bottom and clear waters make it a great family destination. You will see karstic sinkholes along the north coast filled with seashells with the sea on one and grassy meadows with oak trees on the other. The most attractive beach on Vir is Jadro with lovely promenade. Visit the recently discovered remains of preromanic St. Nicholas church next to the port Jadro. Some of the beaches, like the one in bay Sapavac, in the vicinity of Venetian fortress Kastelina, contain peloid, mud beneficial to your health.
The island of Vir is said to be a perfect example of a karst island. That is one of the reasons why it is incredibly interesting for underwater exploration. Visit the Vir diving center and take a regular or adventure diving class. Visit the small island of Skoljic (in local dialect “the small island”)in the east part, covered in pine trees, and enjoy its long sandy beach. It used to be connected to Vir and the sea between them is so shallow, you could almost walk over from one to the other. Here you can find perfect spots for surfing, diving, swimming or sailing. The island offers fun hiking trails through its Mediterranean terrain. Climb to peak Bandira and enjoy the panoramic view of the entire Vir, the nearby islands and mountain Velebit. Rent or take your own mountain bike on a tour around the island.
The island is the perfect location, positioned centrally on Croatia’s coastline, for visiting many of the national parks: Kornati island group, Paklenica, Krka waterfalls and Plitvice lakes. The ancient town of Nin with the smallest cathedral in the world is only 10 km away. The three millennia old town of Zadar is only half an hour of driving away and there you can enjoy all the contents of a modern city.
