Overlooking the small town of Popoli, located in the Majella National Park and in the province of Pescara, the Castello Ducale Cantelmo towers on the slopes of Monte Morrone, a ruined castle dating back to the 11th century.
The castle was built for defense and guarding, primarily to protect the ravines around Popoli from invaders and strangers and the abbey church of San Clemente a Casauria, dating back to 871.
It has a triangular floor plan. Tidolfo, the bishop of Valva had the complex built in the period 1000?1015, but it was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century by the feudal lords Cantelmos from 1269 to the end of the 17th century.
Today the castle complex can be visited.
